About this episode

Do you remember your very first job?

Maybe it was babysitting, mowing lawns, working retail, stocking shelves, or doing whatever someone was willing to pay you to do.

In this episode of LIFEcast: Living in Full Expression, Randy and Grace take another walk down memory lane and talk about the jobs they had growing up — and the lessons those early experiences taught them about work, money, responsibility, and life.

Grace shares how she started working in a small boutique at just 13 years old, selling clothing and working stock. That early experience eventually helped shape her interest in fashion, marketing, and communications.

Randy remembers starting with babysitting, then moving on to mowing lawns for neighbors before getting his first “real” job at 16 in a packaging company.

And then came one of the biggest surprises of working life:

The first paycheck.

You calculate how much you earned, open the check…and suddenly discover taxes and deductions. 😂

But beyond earning money, Randy and Grace talk about the bigger lessons that come from having a job when you’re young.

Things like:

• Showing up on time

• Taking responsibility

• Learning how to deal with customers

• Following instructions

• Developing people skills

• Understanding the value of a dollar

• Learning to manage the money you earned

• Doing a job even when it isn’t exciting

• Developing perseverance and grit

As Randy points out, money feels very different when you know how many hours of work it took to earn it.

The conversation also turns to how dramatically the workplace has changed.

Young people today are growing up with technology, social media, computers, and now artificial intelligence in ways Randy and Grace never could have imagined when they entered the workforce.

That creates incredible new opportunities — but it may also mean some traditional skills, especially face-to-face communication, need a little more attention.

And with AI beginning to change the way many jobs are done, Randy and Grace wonder what the workplace will look like for the next generation.

The episode wraps up with a viewer question from Toni in Springfield, Missouri:

Her grandson just got his first part-time job and already wants to quit because he says it’s boring.

How do you encourage a young person to stick with something without turning it into a lecture?

As usual, Randy and Grace have slightly different approaches. 😄

So tell us in the comments:

What was YOUR first job?

How old were you, what did you do, and what did that job teach you?

We have a feeling there are some great stories out there.
